1989 Dodge Trucks Dakota SE Tires

The 1989 Dodge Trucks Dakota SE came along when the Dakota had already carved out its own place between compact pickups and full-size trucks, giving buyers a more substantial footprint without stepping all the way up in size. That makes tire selection especially important, because this truck could be configured for lighter-duty 4x2 use or heavier 4x4 and GVWR combinations. The 1989 Dodge Trucks Dakota SE uses 15-inch radial tires, with primary sizes ranging from 195/75R15 up to 235/75R15 depending on the exact sub-model. Available choices include traditional whitewall treatments, redline and goldline styles, and truck-oriented radial series. The key is matching the tire to the truck's exact configuration, wheel setup, and intended appearance.

Which Tire Size Is Right for The 1989 Dodge Trucks Dakota SE

The 1989 Dodge Trucks Dakota SE uses four primary tire sizes, all in radial construction on 15-inch rims. Because those sizes vary by drivetrain and GVWR, the first step is confirming the truck's exact sub-model before choosing a tire. Once that is settled, the decision shifts to sidewall style, tire series, and whether the truck is being kept in a more traditional presentation or a more utility-oriented setup.

1
195/75R15Metric radial
Fit(s): 4x2 (GVWR 4480) and 4x4 (GVWR 5110)
Construction: RadialRim: 15 in

A 195/75R15 is a metric radial tire with a 195-millimeter section width, a 75-series profile, and a 15-inch rim diameter. On the 1989 Dodge Trucks Dakota SE, this is one of the narrower primary fitments and remains a fully modern radial construction. Product choices in this size include Coker Classic and American Classic lines, with both narrow whitewall and wide whitewall treatments available through Star Series and American Classic Radial offerings. This size is worth considering when your Dakota SE's exact sub-model calls for it and you want to stay with the correct overall fitment type on a 15-inch wheel.

205/75R15Metric radial
Fit(s): 4x2 (GVWR 4480), 4x2 (GVWR 5090), and 4x4 (GVWR 5110)
Construction: RadialRim: 15 in

A 205/75R15 keeps the same 15-inch rim diameter while stepping up to a 205-millimeter section width in a 75-series radial format. For the 1989 Dodge Trucks Dakota SE, it appears across multiple sub-models, making it one of the more broadly used fitments within the range. This size has especially wide product variety, including BFGoodrich, American Classic, Coker Classic, Tornel, Maxxis, and Travelstar, with narrow whitewall, wide whitewall, redline, and goldline choices. It is a useful size to evaluate carefully when you want flexibility in brand character and sidewall appearance without changing the truck's basic rim diameter.

215/75R15Metric radial
Fit(s): 4x2 (GVWR 4480), 4x2 (GVWR 5090), and 4x2 (GVWR 5930)
Construction: RadialRim: 15 in

A 215/75R15 is another metric radial for a 15-inch wheel, using a 215-millimeter section width and a 75-series sidewall profile. Within the 1989 Dodge Trucks Dakota SE range, this size covers several 4x2 configurations and includes both traditional whitewall tires and more truck-oriented radial choices. Available products span BFGoodrich, American Classic, Coker Classic, Tornel, Maxxis, and Travelstar, with sidewall treatments that range from narrow and wide whitewalls to black sidewall all-terrain styling. This size makes sense when your truck's configuration calls for it and you want room to choose between a classic appearance and a more utility-focused tire presentation.

235/75R15Metric radial
Fit(s): 4x4 (GVWR 5110) and 4x4 (GVWR 5770)
Construction: RadialRim: 15 in

A 235/75R15 uses the same 15-inch rim diameter but increases section width to 235 millimeters in a 75-series radial format. On the 1989 Dodge Trucks Dakota SE, this size is tied to the larger 4x4 fitments and carries the strongest visual presence of the primary tire options. Choices include BFGoodrich, American Classic, Coker Classic, Tornel, Maxxis, and Travelstar, with wide whitewall, narrow whitewall, and raised white letter sidewall treatments depending on the tire series. It deserves a closer look when the truck needs the broader 4x4 fitment and the owner wants to balance load-minded sizing with either a classic or more rugged appearance.

1989 Dodge Trucks Dakota SE Sub-Model Tires

Sub-model fitment matters on the 1989 Dodge Trucks Dakota SE because tire size changes across 4x2 and 4x4 versions and also within different GVWR ratings. Checking the exact configuration first helps narrow the correct size before comparing brands, sidewall styles, or tire series.

1

1989 Dodge Trucks Dakota SE 4x2 (GVWR 4480)

This Dakota SE 4x2 configuration can use 195/75R15, 205/75R15, or 215/75R15 radial tires on 15-inch rims. That makes wheel and existing tire verification especially important before choosing between the available whitewall-oriented and more understated radial options.

This 4x2 GVWR 5090 version narrows the fitment range to 205/75R15 or 215/75R15 radial tires. The main decision becomes confirming which of those two sizes is already on the truck, then selecting the right sidewall style and tire series for its intended look and use.

1989 Dodge Trucks Dakota SE 4x2 (GVWR 5930)

This heavier-rated 4x2 Dakota SE uses 215/75R15 radial tires on 15-inch rims. With the primary size already defined, attention can move to product differences such as whitewall treatment, rim-width suitability, and whether the truck is being kept in a cleaner stock-style presentation or a more work-oriented setup.

1989 Dodge Trucks Dakota SE 4x4 (GVWR 5110)

This Dakota SE 4x4 configuration spans 195/75R15, 205/75R15, and 235/75R15 radial tire fitments. Because the size range is wider here, confirming the actual wheel and tire setup matters before choosing between classic whitewall radials and more truck-focused raised white letter options.

1989 Dodge Trucks Dakota SE 4x4 (GVWR 5770)

This 4x4 GVWR 5770 version uses 235/75R15 radial tires on 15-inch rims. That simplifies the fitment question and shifts the decision toward sidewall appearance, tire series, and making sure the existing wheel width and vehicle clearance still suit the truck's current setup.

Important Fitment Notes

The tire sizes listed on this page assume factory-standard vehicle configuration. The following modifications may affect tire fitment and are not reflected in this guide:

  • Wheel modifications (wider rims, offset changes, aftermarket wheels)
  • Suspension changes (lowering, lift kits, spring replacements)
  • Body alterations (fender modifications, custom bodywork)

If your vehicle has been modified from factory specifications, verify tire clearance before purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions

These FAQs focus on the tire sizes used on the 1989 Dodge Trucks Dakota SE, how those sizes vary by sub-model, and what to compare when choosing among radial, whitewall, and truck-oriented tire options.

Tire Size & Fitment

What tire size fits a 1989 Dodge Trucks Dakota SE?

The 1989 Dodge Trucks Dakota SE uses 195/75R15, 205/75R15, 215/75R15, or 235/75R15 tires, depending on the exact drivetrain and GVWR configuration. All of those primary fitments are radial tires mounted on 15-inch rims, but they are not shared evenly across every Dakota SE sub-model.

The practical step is identifying the truck as a 4x2 or 4x4 and matching the GVWR version before selecting a tire. After that, confirm the wheel diameter and the size already on the truck, especially if it has had wheel changes or prior replacements, since appearance and sizing options vary quite a bit within this Dakota SE range.

What size rim does a 1989 Dodge Trucks Dakota SE use?

The primary tire sizes for the 1989 Dodge Trucks Dakota SE are all built for a 15-inch rim diameter. That is consistent across the full size range from 195/75R15 through 235/75R15, even though the section width and overall dimensions change from one fitment to another.

Rim diameter is only part of the fitment picture, so it still helps to check wheel width before choosing a tire. A truck that still has 15-inch wheels can still require a different tire size depending on whether it is a lighter 4x2 setup or a heavier 4x4 configuration, and aftermarket wheels can further change what should be verified.

Why does the 1989 Dodge Trucks Dakota SE have more than one tire size?

More than one tire size appears on the 1989 Dodge Trucks Dakota SE because the truck was offered in different 4x2 and 4x4 configurations with different GVWR ratings. That leads to a spread of primary fitments ranging from 195/75R15 up to 235/75R15, all on 15-inch rims.

That variation means the right tire is tied to the truck's exact configuration, not just the year and model name. Checking the sub-model first helps avoid choosing a size that belongs to a different Dakota SE setup, and it also keeps product comparisons focused on tires that match the truck's intended wheel and load-minded fitment range.

Choosing the Right Tire

What should I consider when choosing a 1989 Dodge Trucks Dakota SE tire?

Start with the correct primary size for the truck's exact sub-model, since the 1989 Dodge Trucks Dakota SE can use four different 15-inch radial sizes. From there, compare tire construction details, sidewall treatment, rim-width suitability, and load figures where those specifications are shown for the size you need.

Appearance also plays a major role because some Dakota SE tire options lean toward classic whitewall styling while others carry a more truck-oriented look. The best comparison comes from matching the tire to the truck's actual use, whether that means a cleaner restoration-minded presentation, a more utility-focused stance, or simply maintaining the setup already proven on the vehicle.

What sidewall styles are available for 1989 Dodge Trucks Dakota SE tires?

Sidewall choices for the 1989 Dodge Trucks Dakota SE include narrow whitewall, wide whitewall, redline, goldline, RBL, and RWL depending on tire size and series. Some sizes, especially 205/75R15, 215/75R15, and 235/75R15, offer much broader sidewall variety than others.

That matters because sidewall style can change the truck's character as much as the tread itself. A whitewall can give the Dakota SE a more traditional presentation, while redline, goldline, or raised white letter styling creates a different period feel, so it helps to narrow the correct size first and then choose the sidewall treatment that suits the truck's intended appearance.

What brands offer tires for the 1989 Dodge Trucks Dakota SE?

Tires for the 1989 Dodge Trucks Dakota SE are available from BFGoodrich, American Classic, Coker Classic, Maxxis, Tornel, and Travelstar. Brand availability changes somewhat by size, so one Dakota SE fitment may have more choices in sidewall style or series than another.

A useful way to compare those options is to look beyond the brand name and focus on what each tire actually brings to the truck. Sidewall treatment, tire series, radial style, rim-width specification, and load information often do more to shape the final choice than brand alone, especially when the truck is being matched to a specific visual theme or driving purpose.

Restoration & Appearance

Which tire should I choose for a period-style 1989 Dodge Trucks Dakota SE?

A period-style 1989 Dodge Trucks Dakota SE usually starts with the correct primary radial size for the truck's exact sub-model and then narrows the choice by sidewall presentation. Whitewall radials in series from American Classic, Coker Classic, BFGoodrich, Maxxis, Tornel, and Travelstar give the truck a more traditional late-1980s appearance than a purely utility-focused tire.

The most convincing result usually comes from keeping the tire size true to the truck's configuration and selecting a sidewall width that matches the look you want. For a stricter restoration, it is wise to compare against original owner literature, period photos, or marque-specific references rather than assuming any current whitewall or stripe treatment reflects original delivery.

How does tire construction affect the appearance of a restored 1989 Dodge Trucks Dakota SE?

On the 1989 Dodge Trucks Dakota SE, the primary fitments are radial tires, so construction itself already aligns with the truck's era. The bigger appearance difference comes from the style of radial selected, since a narrow or wide whitewall creates a much different presentation than raised white letter or black sidewall truck-oriented designs.

That means a restored Dakota SE can look more formal, more personal-use, or more utility-minded without leaving its basic radial fitment type. Keeping the correct size for the specific sub-model is still essential, because a tire can have the right visual flavor yet still be the wrong fitment for the truck's drivetrain and GVWR combination.

Fitment, Maintenance & Road Use

Can modifications affect tire fitment on a 1989 Dodge Trucks Dakota SE?

Yes, modifications can affect tire fitment on a 1989 Dodge Trucks Dakota SE even when the truck still uses 15-inch wheels. Changes such as aftermarket wheel width, different wheel offset, suspension alterations, or body clearance differences can influence whether the truck's original size range still suits the current setup.

That is especially important on a model that already spans several factory tire sizes. A truck may wear a size that belongs to another Dakota SE configuration, so it helps to verify wheel dimensions, steering clearance, and fender space before replacing tires, rather than assuming the size currently installed reflects the proper fitment for that exact sub-model.

What should I inspect before driving a 1989 Dodge Trucks Dakota SE on new tires?

Before road use, inspect the wheels for correct diameter and condition, make sure the new tires match the truck's proper size range, and confirm that valve stems, lug hardware, and inflation are in order. It also helps to check for any rubbing at the steering stops or near the fenders if the truck has non-stock wheels or suspension changes.

Collector and occasional-use trucks deserve an extra look at the rest of the chassis as well. Brake condition, alignment, worn steering parts, and tired suspension components can all affect how a newly mounted set of tires behaves, so a quick inspection before regular driving helps the Dakota SE feel settled and avoids blaming the tires for unrelated mechanical issues.

How should 1989 Dodge Trucks Dakota SE tires be maintained?

Tires on a 1989 Dodge Trucks Dakota SE should be maintained with regular pressure checks, routine visual inspection, and periodic review for uneven wear. Even on a lightly used truck, it is smart to watch for sidewall cracking, tread damage, bulges, punctures, or signs of slow air loss, especially if the vehicle spends long periods parked.

Storage conditions matter too, because heat, sunlight, and long stationary periods can age a tire that still looks usable at first glance. Keeping the truck on the correct size, checking inflation before each drive, and inspecting the full contact patch every so often will do more to preserve ride quality and safe road manners than simply replacing tires by tread depth alone.
