1954 Studebaker Champion Tires

The 1954 Studebaker Champion came from a period when independent American cars leaned heavily on smart packaging, clean styling, and practical road manners to stand apart from Detroit’s largest brands. That makes tire choice on this model less about chasing modern trends and more about matching the car’s character and configuration. The 1954 Studebaker Champion uses bias-ply 15-inch tire fitments, with 640-15 and 670-15 sizes tied to different sub-models. Available choices include blackwall, narrow whitewall, and wide whitewall treatments, along with radial-equivalent sizing for owners considering an alternative construction. The right selection starts with the exact sub-model, then balances appearance, wheel compatibility, and intended road use.

Which Tire Size Is Right for The 1954 Studebaker Champion

The 1954 Studebaker Champion uses two primary tire sizes, and the correct one depends on the sub-model. Both fitments are bias-ply tires for 15-inch rims, so the first step is confirming whether the car is a Champion 6 Cyl. or a Champion Wagon. Once that is settled, the decision shifts to sidewall style, tire series, and whether to stay with the original-style bias-ply format or evaluate a radial equivalent.

A 670-15 numeric bias-ply size indicates an approximate 6.70-inch nominal section width and a 15-inch rim diameter. For the 1954 Studebaker Champion, it remains a traditional bias-ply fitment but opens up a broader range of vintage-style choices than the smaller size. Options include Firestone, BFGoodrich, US Royal, Goodyear, Universal Vintage Tire, Coker Classic, Avon, Excelsior, and STA, with blackwall, narrow whitewall, and multiple wide whitewall presentations. This is the size to evaluate when the car is configured for the larger Champion fitment and appearance choice matters as much as construction.

1954 Studebaker Champion Sub-Model Tires

Tire fitment for the 1954 Studebaker Champion changes by sub-model rather than staying uniform across the range. Checking the exact body configuration matters here, because the Champion 6 Cyl. and Champion Wagon use different primary tire sizes even though both ride on 15-inch bias-ply tires.

1954 Studebaker Champion 6 Cyl.

The 1954 Studebaker Champion 6 Cyl. uses the smaller of the two primary Champion tire fitments, remaining in a 15-inch bias-ply format. That makes size confirmation especially important before comparing blackwall or whitewall options or considering radial-equivalent sizing for a different driving and appearance balance.

Bias-Ply to Radial Tire Conversion for the 1954 Studebaker Champion

The 1954 Studebaker Champion’s 640-15 size has three radial-equivalent options, while 670-15 has four. For 640-15, the choices are 175R15 as an 80-series metric radial, P175/75R15 as a 75-series P-metric radial, and P185/70R15 as a 70-series P-metric radial. For 670-15, the equivalents are 195R15, P205/75R15, P215/70R15, and 670R15 as a bias-look radial. These options vary by sizing convention and profile, with recommended rim-width ranges of 5-6 inches for 640-15 and 5-7 inches for 670-15, so wheel size, overall dimensions, and clearance should be checked carefully.

Important Considerations When Replacing Bias Ply With Radial
  • Compare overall diameter and section width carefully to ensure proper fit.
  • Verify recommended rim range (5-7 in) and load needs match your vehicle specifications.
  • Check fender clearance, steering clearance, and stance before installation.
  • Consider suspension condition and intended road use when choosing equivalents.

Important Fitment Notes

The tire sizes listed on this page assume factory-standard vehicle configuration. The following modifications may affect tire fitment and are not reflected in this guide:

  • Wheel modifications (wider rims, offset changes, aftermarket wheels)
  • Suspension changes (lowering, lift kits, spring replacements)
  • Body alterations (fender modifications, custom bodywork)

If your vehicle has been modified from factory specifications, verify tire clearance before purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions

Owners shopping for 1954 Studebaker Champion tires usually need to sort out sub-model size differences first, then compare bias-ply choices, radial equivalents, sidewall styles, and basic wheel-fitment checks before putting the car back on the road.

Tire Size & Fitment

What tire size fits a 1954 Studebaker Champion?

A 1954 Studebaker Champion uses either 640-15 or 670-15, depending on the sub-model. The Champion 6 Cyl. uses 640-15, while the Champion Wagon uses 670-15. Both are bias-ply tire sizes for 15-inch rims, so the difference is not construction type or rim diameter, but the specific size assigned to the vehicle configuration.

That means the first step is identifying the exact sub-model before comparing brands or sidewall styles. A 15-inch wheel alone does not settle the question, because both sizes share that rim diameter. Checking the current wheel width, the car’s stance, and any past wheel or suspension changes helps avoid choosing a tire that suits the model line generally but not the exact Champion in front of you.

What size rim does a 1954 Studebaker Champion use?

The 1954 Studebaker Champion uses a 15-inch rim with both of its primary tire sizes. That applies whether the car takes 640-15 or 670-15, so rim diameter stays consistent across the covered Champion fitments even though the tire size changes by sub-model.

Rim diameter is only one part of the fitment picture, especially on older cars that may have been altered over the years. It is still worth measuring the actual wheel and comparing its width to the tire being considered. That becomes even more important when looking at radial equivalents, since matching the 15-inch diameter does not automatically confirm wheel compatibility or vehicle clearance.

Why does the 1954 Studebaker Champion have more than one tire size?

The 1954 Studebaker Champion has more than one tire size because different sub-models use different fitments. The Champion 6 Cyl. uses 640-15, while the Champion Wagon uses 670-15. Both remain within the same general period-style 15-inch bias-ply family, but they are not the same size.

For a buyer, that shifts the decision away from brand first and toward vehicle identification first. Wagons often carry a different tire fitment than other body styles within the same model family, and that distinction matters here. Once the exact Champion is confirmed, the next choices become sidewall appearance, tire series, and whether to remain with bias-ply construction or compare the available radial-equivalent sizes.

Bias-Ply & Radial Options

Is 640-15 a bias-ply or radial tire for the 1954 Studebaker Champion?

For the 1954 Studebaker Champion, 640-15 is a bias-ply primary tire size. It is the fitment used on the Champion 6 Cyl. and belongs to the traditional numeric bias-ply sizing system, where the number suggests nominal section width and the final number denotes the 15-inch rim diameter.

That matters because a buyer deciding on 640-15 is choosing not only the correct size but also the original-style construction format for this application. Radial alternatives do exist, but they should be evaluated as equivalents rather than treated as automatic substitutes. Wheel width, overall dimensions, steering clearance, and the car’s intended use all deserve a close look before changing construction.

What radial tire sizes are equivalent to 670-15?

Radial equivalents for 670-15 include 195R15 as an 80-series metric radial, P205/75R15 as a 75-series P-metric radial, P215/70R15 as a 70-series P-metric radial, and 670R15 as a bias-look radial. These give the 1954 Studebaker Champion Wagon owner several ways to compare modern radial construction against the original numeric bias-ply size.

Each option uses a different sizing convention, so the choice is not just about seeing an R in the size code. The recommended rim-width range for the equivalent group is 5-7 inches, which makes wheel confirmation especially useful before changing sizes. Clearance at the fenders and steering components should also be checked, particularly if the car has non-stock wheels or suspension changes.

What should I check before converting my 1954 Studebaker Champion from bias-ply to radial tires?

A bias-ply-to-radial conversion on a 1954 Studebaker Champion starts with matching the radial equivalent to the car’s correct original size. A Champion 6 Cyl. and a Champion Wagon do not begin from the same tire size, so the proper equivalent depends on whether the car uses 640-15 or 670-15 in the first place.

After that, verify the actual wheel width, confirm the 15-inch rim diameter, and compare clearance at the fenders and steering components. Collector cars also deserve a look at suspension wear, ride height, and alignment condition before any construction change. A radial equivalent can be a useful alternative, but it should be judged against the specific wheel and vehicle setup rather than assumed interchangeable.

Choosing the Right Tire

What should I consider when choosing a 670-15 tire for a 1954 Studebaker Champion?

Choosing a 670-15 tire for a 1954 Studebaker Champion starts with confirming that the car is the Wagon sub-model, since that is the Champion fitment tied to this size. From there, the main considerations are bias-ply construction, 15-inch wheel compatibility, sidewall presentation, and the specific tire series or brand that best suits the car’s intended appearance and use.

The 670-15 range is broad enough that buyers can compare blackwall, narrow whitewall, and several wide whitewall treatments without leaving the correct size family. Rim-width specifications also vary across products, so it helps to compare the tire to the wheel actually on the car. That is especially worthwhile when the Champion has replacement wheels or a restoration history that may have changed the original setup.

What sidewall styles are available for 1954 Studebaker Champion tires?

1954 Studebaker Champion tires are available in blackwall, narrow whitewall, and wide whitewall styles. Those appearance choices show up across the two primary bias-ply sizes, although the broader mix appears in 670-15. Sidewall treatment can change the car’s visual character as much as the tire brand or series, especially on a mid-1950s sedan or wagon.

That makes sidewall choice an appearance decision tied closely to the car’s finish, trim, and restoration direction. A blackwall can give a simpler, understated look, while narrow or wide whitewalls move the presentation in a more dressed-up period-style direction. The key is choosing the sidewall style only after confirming the correct tire size for the exact Champion sub-model and wheel.

What brands offer tires for the 1954 Studebaker Champion?

Tires for the 1954 Studebaker Champion are available from brands including BFGoodrich, Firestone, Avon, Excelsior, US Royal, Coker Classic, Universal Vintage Tire, Goodyear, and STA. Brand availability depends on whether the car uses 640-15 or 670-15, with the larger 670-15 fitment offering the widest spread of choices.

Brand alone should not be the only deciding factor on a vintage application like this. It is more useful to compare the correct size first, then look at construction, sidewall style, tire series, wheel-width suitability, and load figures where they are stated. That approach keeps the focus on a tire that suits the exact Champion configuration instead of choosing by name alone.

Restoration & Appearance

Which tire should I choose for a period-style 1954 Studebaker Champion?

A period-style 1954 Studebaker Champion restoration begins with the correct primary tire size for the exact sub-model: 640-15 for the Champion 6 Cyl. and 670-15 for the Champion Wagon. Both are bias-ply fitments on 15-inch rims, which makes bias-ply construction the natural starting point when the goal is to preserve a traditional mid-1950s visual character.

Once the size is settled, the period-style decision usually comes down to blackwall versus whitewall treatment and the particular tire series that gives the look you want. Exact originality can vary by car, trim, and owner preference, so appearance-focused buyers should compare the tire to historical photos, marque-club guidance, or other vehicle-specific references rather than assuming any one sidewall treatment is universally correct.

How does tire construction affect the appearance of a restored 1954 Studebaker Champion?

On a restored 1954 Studebaker Champion, tire construction affects the car’s appearance as well as its road feel. A bias-ply tire preserves the original-style numeric size format and traditional profile associated with the era, while a radial equivalent can change the visual impression depending on the sizing convention chosen and whether the tire is a standard radial or a bias-look radial.

That difference is most noticeable when the restoration goal is a distinctly mid-1950s presentation rather than simply road use. A bias-look radial in 670R15 can help retain a more traditional look on the larger fitment, while metric and P-metric radials read more modern in size labeling and shape. Comparing the tire visually with the wheel, hubcap, and body lines usually clarifies which construction suits the project best.

Fitment, Maintenance & Road Use

Can modifications affect tire fitment on a 1954 Studebaker Champion?

Modifications can absolutely affect tire fitment on a 1954 Studebaker Champion, even when the car still uses one of its original size families. Aftermarket wheels, altered wheel width, changes in offset, lowering, replacement springs, or body repairs around the wheel openings can all influence how a 640-15, 670-15, or radial equivalent sits and clears.

That is why an older Champion should be treated as the car in front of you, not just the car described by year and model. Measuring the actual wheel, checking steering sweep, and looking for rubbing marks or tight fender clearance can prevent expensive mistakes. Those checks matter most when moving from the original bias-ply size to a radial equivalent or when the car’s stance has been changed.

What should I inspect before driving a 1954 Studebaker Champion on new tires?

Before driving a 1954 Studebaker Champion on new tires, inspect the wheels for damage, confirm the wheel diameter and width, and make sure the tire seats properly and clears the body and steering components. The car should also be checked for obvious suspension wear, loose steering parts, and any sign that the old tires rubbed or contacted surrounding hardware.

Air pressure, lug-nut torque, and a slow walk-around after the first miles are worth the time on a collector car. It also helps to look for uneven ride height or alignment issues that could shorten tire life quickly. A Champion that has been stored for long periods deserves extra attention, since dried components and long-static suspension parts can show problems once the car returns to road use.

How should 640-15 or 670-15 tires on a collector 1954 Studebaker Champion be maintained?

Collector-car tires on a 1954 Studebaker Champion should be maintained with regular pressure checks, visual inspections, and careful storage habits. Whether the car uses 640-15 or 670-15, older-style tires benefit from being kept clean, protected from long exposure to sunlight and ozone sources, and watched for sidewall cracking, cuts, bulges, tread wear, or slow air loss.

Low-mileage classics can age out their tires long before the tread is gone, so appearance alone is not enough. Rotating the car periodically during storage, keeping the suspension unloaded only when appropriate, and rechecking pressure before each outing helps the tire maintain its shape. Any Champion that feels different on the road after storage should have its tires and wheel setup inspected before a longer drive.
